Our mission statement - your opportunity to help

In the by-laws for the Rock Prairie Master Gardeners Association is the following article:

The mission of this organization shall be:

1. To promote the Master Gardening mission through education and service to community.
2. To serve the needs of all gardeners in Rock County and the surrounding area.
3. To promote the continuing education of members through horticultural education, programs, tours, etc.
4. To promote community service through volunteer activities.
5. To recognize members who meet and maintain certification.
6. To provide for the exchange of ideas and to provide opportunities to promote the understanding of responsible gardening practices.
7. To provide a link between the community, the UW Extension and Rotary Gardens.

Although we do have an enumerated mission statement what we would like to do is prepare a mission statement that is more condensed and could be used in print, on the Internet, in correspondence, and through other media.

You have an opportunity to help us create a shorter more succinct version of this vitally important explanation of who we are and what we do.

We are looking for your input. Think it over and drop us a note here on the blog, or by email to or drop it off at Mike's office at the Court House in Janesville.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to consider this.

  1. Here's a stab at it:

The Rock Prairie Master Gardener Association is a volunteer organization dedicated to supporting the University of Wisconsin- Extension by providing research-based education and service to the residents of Rock County. The Association will encourage its members to participate in continuing education and community service by providing and promoting classes, programs, tours and volunteer opportunities. The Association will recognize members who meet and maintain certification, and also those who show exemplary service and leadership. The Association will provide a pleasant and unbiased environment for the exchange of ideas, including the understanding of responsible and environmentally sound gardening practices. The Association will provide a link between the community, the University of Wisconsin-Extension and Rotary Botanical Gardens.

  2. Ok, my example is not very condensed! Perhaps just use the first sentence as the primary mission statement?

  3. I agree with Janice...the first sentence is good. A mission statement must be short & to the point whereby all members can clearly and easily remember it. Way to go!
