St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital invites you to tour our
Healing Garden (currently under development) and hear from the lead designer,
Richard Slayton, Senior Landscape Architect with Erdman in Madison,
Wisconsin. Richard will share the background, and his design concepts for
the Healing Garden. St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital opened on January 9,
2012 and the Healing Garden is the first fund raising project of the St. Mary’s
Janesville Foundation. The garden is tucked between the Dean Clinic and
St. Mary’s Janesville on their shared campus on Racine Street in Janesville,
just east of I-94. The Healing Garden is being created to serve our patients,
their families, visitors, staff and physicians. The garden will be a
restorative healing garden with plant material, hardscape features and water to
soothe and help with the healing process.
Efforts to raise the necessary funds to build out the
healing garden began in October of 2011. The St. Mary’s Janesville
Foundation Board approved the release of funds to begin the landscape work and
plantings to create the first segment of the garden this summer. Plans call for
completion of the garden in the fall of 2013. It is the hospital’s goal
to have the garden be a true community project. Already hospital
volunteers tend to the container plants on the terrace just outside of the
building. Hospital staff are also ready to volunteer to help plant the
garden and maintain it on a regular basis. Youth groups and individual
volunteers have also volunteered to help. And our goal is to have UW
Extension Master Gardeners work with our volunteers by sharing their knowledge
and leading garden projects to keep our garden healthy and beautiful.
