Season's Eatings.

I use the Thanksgiving holiday as an opportunity to catch up on reading.

Perhaps it is the nature of this holiday that my usual reading is about food.  Past readings have included Barbara Kingsolver's, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle and Michael Pollan's, The Omnivore's Dilemma.  This year my option was something a bit lighter, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Complete Stories and Novels of Sherlock Holmes.

Well, my reading wound up not being completely food-free.  The weekly Newsweek's front page article was about the food discrepancies that have emerged in the US social classes.  *big despondent sigh*
Combine this with the recent unemployment report for our area:
Oh, and let's not forget about this:
Yes, yes... this is a Master Gardener blog but we can't forget where our food comes from.  Or, in the case of the Newsweek article, where it DOESN'T come from.

  1. Mike,
I think this blog is a perfect fit when discussing where our food comes from. Great article from Newsweek. I don't know how we got to this point, where food has become such an issue (obesity, eating disorders, eat organic? locavore? GMO?). I know we don't spend as much on our food budget as other developed countries do. Another interesting article is in Reader's Digest (October, 2010 issue). Stewart Brand (father of Earth Day and creator of Whole Earth Catalog) has re-thought the issue, and his conclusions are surprising. A short part of it is at: http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/food/making-the-case-for-genetically-modified-crops-2392510)
