Continuing Education

As the Rock Prairie Association transitions into the new MG year (September 1, 2011 to August 31, 2012) we will have a variety of new continuing education opportunities for members.  The details are still being worked out, but the three general categories will be:

Field trips.  Our region is full of educational destinations that MGVs can visit.  We’ll organize a couple trips for structured visits that will count towards your continuing education requirement.  Only guided portions of field trips count towards continuing education.

Laboratory activities at UW-Rock County.  In place of the long running Thursday Evenings at the Gardens program, hands-on labs will follow the monthly business meetings, starting at UW-Rock County in March 2012 (or sooner).

Independent study.  Independent study will be a completely new opportunity for MGVs in the Rock Prairie Association.  The intent is to give members of the RPMGA an opportunity for at-home study on topics atypical to MGV training or at a level more in-depth than usual training.  Content is facilitated by the horticulture educator.  On-line readings will be posted to the Rock County UWEX-MGV website.  Participants will be expected to provide thoughtful commentary via the blog’s comment box in response to the assigned reading.  Questions will be provided to guide your responses.  The amount of continuing education hours will be posted with each assignment.   This will be a pilot program for MGV continuing education and is based on the distance education program I participated in last year through the University of Minnesota.

The first of the independent study posts can be found here.

More information about all these opportunities will be made available in the near future.
